The Lone Ranger (2013)

Tuottaja Jerry Bruckheimer ja ohjaaja Gore Verbinski, voimakaksikko jättimenestykseen purjehtineen “Pirates of the Caribbean” -elokuvasarjan takaa, tuo valkokankaalle Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Filmsin elokuvan “The Lone Ranger”. Kyseessä on toimintaa ja huumoria pursuava jännitysseikkailu, jossa vanha naamiosankari herätetään henkiin uudistuneena. Intiaanisoturi Tonto (Johnny Depp) loihtii silmiemme eteen huikeita tarinoita, jotka ovat tehneet John Reidistä (Armie Hammer) legendaarisen lainvartijan – ja niin yleisö pääsee mukaan höyryjunan lailla eteenpäin jyskyttävälle matkalle, jonka varrella on luvassa melkoisia yllätyksiä ja hurttia huumoria kaksikon vielä opetellessa yhteistyötä taistelussaan ahneutta ja vääryyttä vastaan.

The Lone Rangersissa näyttää kaikki olevan kohdallaan. Komeita maisemia, vauhtia, näyttäviä efektejä, komea sankari, ohjaajana Gore Verbinski, tuottajana Jerry Bruckhaimer ja pääosissa komea sankari ja Johnny Depp. Sellainen tarjonta, josta pitäisi syntyä vauhdikas ja viihdyttävä seikkailu Pirates of the Caribbean (sen ensimmäisen) tyyliin, mutta ei. Kaksi ja puolituntinen massiivisella 250 miljoonan dollarin budjetilla kasattu elokuva on kyllästyttävän puuduttava ja ennalta arvattava. Johnny Depp on kyllä loistava Tonton roolissa, mutta ei hänkään yksin jaksa kannatella tätä ylipitkää tehosteviritelmää. Elokuvaan on yritetty ympätä kaikkea mahdollista seikkailusta, vauhdista, toivottomasta romanssista, politiikasta, pahiksista, intiaaneista ja sankarin kasvutarinasta, mutta mikään ei oikein nouse lentoon. Ehkä tämä toimii kymmenen vuotiaille pojille, jotka ihailevat intiaaneja ja lännensankareita, mutta omilla aivoilla ajattelevalle tämä on ihan turhan puuduttavaa toistoa ja tehostekikkailua. Tulee mieleen muutaman vuoden takainen Wild Wild West, jolla yritettiin saada uutta tuulta vanhoihin lännenelokuviin. Ei onnistunut silloin, eikä varmaan onnistu nytkään. Ilmeisesti elokuvan tuottajatkin ovat sen tajunneet ja yrittävät madollisimman laajalla, saman päivän maailmanlaajuisella levityksellä minimoida tulevat vahingot ja maksimoida elokuvan tuotto. Ensimmäisen viikonlopun saattaa elokuva kantaa ohjaajan, tuottajan ja Johnny Deppin siivellä, mutta pelkään pahoin että ensimmäisen viikonlopun jälkeen tältä elokuvalta katkeaa lento. Saa nähdä miten käy. Jos pidät P.O.T.C. elokuvista, luultavasti pidät tästäkin, mutta mikäli haet jotain uutta on The Lone Ranger huono valinta. Kaksi tähteä Johnny Deppille, puoli tähteä elokuvalle.

In the 1930s, an elderly Tonto tells a young boy the tale of John Reid, the Lone Ranger. An idealistic lawyer, he rides with his brother and fellow Texas Rangers in pursuit of the notorious Butch Cavendish. Ambushed by the outlaw and left for dead, John Reid is rescued by the renegade Comanche, Tonto, at the insistence of a mysterious white horse and offers to help him to bring Cavendish to justice. Becoming a reluctant masked rider with a seemingly incomprehensible partner, Reid pursues the criminal against all obstacles. However, John and Tonto learn that Cavendish is only part of a far greater injustice and the pair must fight it in an adventure that would make them a legend.

There seems to be everything you need for a good adventure movie in Lone Ranger. Beautiful scenery, great action scenes, handsome hero, good director, fine producer and Johnny Depp. A kind of collection of everything that you can’t loose. You have every element to make rapid and entertaining action and adventure movie, the one like Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one), but no. With the length of two and half an hours and massive 250 million dollar budget, Lone Ranger is boring and predictable movie. Johnny Depp is great as a role of Tonto, but even he can’t carry the whole movie. There is everything dump to this movie, action, adventure, hopeful romance, politics, bad guys, indians and heroes growth story, but nothing seems to carry enough. Maybe if you are a 10 year old boy, who like indians and western heroes, you might like this, but if you have even a little sense of wisdom this is just too much and lame. This brings flashbacks from Wild Wild West, which tried to bring back the lost glory of old western stories without any success. This is just another Wild Wild Mess. Somehow I think that even the producers of this movie has noticed it. Same day worldwide distribution is just a try to minimize the loss and collect as much money that is possible with its first weekend release. Maybe it will hold it’s first weekend with it’s director, producer and Johnny Depp, but somehow I feel that we won’t see any bigger success. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. If you like P.O.T.C. movies, you might like this. But if you try to find something new, don’t bother. Two stars to Johnny Depp, half star to the movie. That’s all.
