Tositapahtumien inspiroima The Rite seuraa pappisseminaarissa opiskelevaa nuorta pappia Michael Kovakia (Colin O’Donoghue), skeptikkoa, joka päätyy vasten tahtoaan Vatikaaniin manaajien kouluun. Tästä elokuvasta ollaan laajasti montaa mieltä. Siinä missä toinen haukkuu elokuvan niin toinen antaa lähes täydet pisteet. Itse kuulun tuohon jälkimmäiseen koulukuntaan. Juuri kun olin jo luullut nähneeni kaikki manaaja elokuvat ja juuri kun ehkä liiankin skeptisenä menen elokuvaa katsomaan niin se yllättää…. ja positiivisesti. Elokuvan tunnelma on vahva. Äänimaisema kaikessa kliseisyydessänkin vaikuttava ja tietenkin kulissina toimiva Ikuinen Rooma on upea. Rooman historialliset maisemat, kapeat kujat, likaiset ja rähjäiset asunnot antavat elokuvalle vahvan selkärangan. Puhumattakaan Sir Anthony Hopkinsin vahvasta tulkinnasta. Vaikka itse olenkin täydellinen ateisti on siitä huolimatta joskus mainiota katsoa tällaista laaduksta ja jotenkin mukavalla tavalla vanhanaikaista elokuvaa ja ajatella että jospa sittenkin….

Michael, the son of a funeral director grows indifferent to his father and joins a Seminary. On his way to the course completion, he is overwhelmed by a strong lack of faith. His religious beliefs are further jolted when he sees a young girl haplessly dying in a road accident for whom he reluctantly performs the ritual to absolve her sins. His mentor still believes in him and urges him to go to Italy to take an exorcism course hoping that he it would strengthen his faith in Christianity. In Italy he attends a session from Father Xavier who soon becomes aware of his skepticism. As a result he sends him to an eminent Jesuit exorcist, Father Lucas, whose ways though questionable are quite effective. He witnesses the exorcism of a sixteen year old girl but still seems unconvinced. Father Lucas explains to him that it takes multiple sessions over a long stretch of time to completely free a victim from the demon.

This movie is widely different views. While the second film is barking so the second gives an almost perfect score. I belong to that latter school of thought. Just when you thought I was seeing all the exorcist movies, and just when you thought perhaps too skeptical I go to a movie to watch so it will surprise you …. and positively. Atmosphere of the film is strong. Soundscape in all kliseisyydessänkin impressive and, of course, spurious’ Eternal Rome is magnificent. Rome’s historic landscapes, narrow alleys, dirty and dilapidated homes give the movie a strong spine. Not to mention, Sir Anthony Hopkins, the strong interpretation. Even though I am a complete atheist myself is that, despite the sometimes regarded as a great base for this kind of high quality and in some way to a pleasant old-fashioned movie and think that maybe, after all…
