The Thing (2011)

Night Visions Maximum Halloween 3011 -festivaalin avajaiselokuva on itseoikeutetusti The Thing, joka lukeutuu vuoden odotetuimpiin suuren budjetin genretapauksiin. Elokuva ammentaa samasta tarinasta kuin kauhumaestro John Carpenterin jääasemakauhuseikkailu The Thing – “Se” jostakin (1982), mutta tapahtumat sijoittuvat elokuvaa klassikkoa edeltävään aikaan.

Amerikkalainen paleontologi Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, mm. Scott Pilgrim vastaan maailma) liittyy Antarktiksella norjalaiseen tiedemiesryhmään, joka on löytänyt ikijäähän vangiksi jääneen tuntemattoman organismin. Kun jää löydöksen ympäriltä sulaa, joku alkaa surmata tutkijoita. Ryhmän pahimmaksi painajaiseksi kasvaa pelko toisia ihmisiä kohtaan. “Se” voi olla kuka tahansa.

The Thing on paljossa velkaa vanhalle John Carpenterin elokuvalle. Ei kuitenkaan huonossa vaan hyvässä mielessä. Vaikka elokuvassa on paljon yhtäläisyyksiä vanhaan elokuvaan on siinä myös paljon uutta. On mielenkiintoista nähdä mitä Norjalaisleirissä tapahtui ennen vanhan elokuvan tapahtumia. Tehosteet elokuvassa on toteutettu loistavasti kahdeksankymmentäluvun hengessä. Mielestäni elokuva tavoittaa hienosti Carpenterin vainoharhaisen hengen olemalla kuitenkin omanlainen ja siten tarpeeksi erottuva loistavasta Carpenterin klassikosta. Ei tästä varmaan samanlaista klassikkoa synny mutta ihan mukavaa vainoharhaista säikyttelyä kuitenkin. Kyllä tämän voi varmaan uudelleenkin vielä joskus katsoa.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd is invited by Dr. Sandor Halvorson to join his team who have found something extraordinary. Deep below the Arctic ice, they have found an alien spacecraft that has been there for perhaps 100,000 years. Not far from where the craft landed, they find the remains of the occupant. It’s cut out of the ice and taken back to their camp but as the ice melts, the creature reanimates and not only begins to attack them but manages to infect them, with team members devolving into the alien creature.

The Thing is in much debt to the old John Carpenter movie. However, it is bad, but in a good way. Although the movie has a lot of similarities to the old movie, it also has a lot of new things. It will be interesting to see what the Norwegian camp took place before the old film. Effects, the movie is outstanding spirit of the eighties. I think the film captures superbly Carpenter’s paranoid life by being your own kind, however, and thus sufficiently distinctive stellar Carpenter’s classic. This probably is not the same kind of classic games created but it’s pretty nice paranoid scare, however. Yes this can probably still occasionally look at which restarts.
