Total Recall (2012)

Total Recall on Philip K. Dickin novelliin “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” perustuva uusintaversio toimintatrilleristä, jonka keskiössä ovat muisti ja todellisuus.

Yhtiö nimeltä Rekall kykenee tekemään unelmista todentuntuisia muistikuvia. Tehdastyöntekijä Douglas Quaidin (Colin Farrell) mielestä tämä kuulostaa houkuttelevalta tavalta hankkia hieman vaihtelua turhauttavan arjen keskelle. Vaikka hänellä toki onkin kaunis vaimo (Kate Beckinsale), jota hän rakastaa, niin aidot muistot superagentin elämästä saattaisivat silti kummasti piristää hänen elämäänsä.

Kun toimenpide sitten meneekin pahasti pieleen, Quaidista tulee pahaksi onnekseen takaa-ajettu. Pakoillessaan poliisia, jota komentaa vapaan maailman johtaja Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), Quaid lyöttäytyy yhteen erään kapinallisen taistelijan (Jessica Biel) kanssa, ja yhdessä he ryhtyvät etsimään maanalaisen vastarintaliikkeen johtajaa (Bill Nighy) tehdäkseen lopun Cohaagenin toimista. Fantasian ja todellisuuden raja hämärtyy ja maailman kohtalo on vaakalaudalla, kun Quaid saa tietää kuka hän oikeasti on, ketä hän oikeasti rakastaa ja mikä hänen todellinen kohtalonsa on.

Total Recall on näyttävä, mutta melko tyhjä uusintaversio yhdestä 90-luvun parhaimmista scifi elokuvista. Ehkä elokuvan yleisömäärä on haluttu maksimoida ja toiminta on viety tasolle, jossa ikäraja on voitu painaa mahdollisimman alas. Vauhdin puutteesta elokuvaa ei voi tosin syyttää. Elokuva on turboahdettua toimintaa alusta loppuun. Lähes kokonaan digitaalisissa lavasteissa kuvattu elokuva on komeaa katsottaavaa ja olisi varmasti vieläkin komeampaa 3D muodossa. Kyllä elokuvalla on omat hyvätkin puolensa. Näyttelijät ovat loistavia ja tarina mukavan kutkuttava, mutta kyllä tässä jäädään melko kauaksi Paul Verhoovenin klaustrofobisesta dystopiasta. Jos kuitenkin haluaa katsoa toimivaa popcorn viihdettä, niin sellaisena tämä versio toimii loistavasti. Itse kyllä ehkä mieluummin katson vanhan version seuraavalla kerralla.

In the near future Earth almost uninhabitable, only two territories remain, The United Federation of Britain or UFB, and the Colony. The UFB has been trying to make the Colony part of them but a group led by a man named Matthias and rumor is that a UFB security man, Hauser is helping them but word is that he is dead. Douglas Quaid, a man who lives in the UFB who is married to Lori, has been having nightmares of him being in some kind of battle with another woman, that ends with him getting captured. He decides to go to Rekall, a place where a person can experience something by having it implanted in his mind. When the memory he chooses is about to be implanted, it is detected that he has memories of being a spy, that’s when they pull guns on him but some UFB security people show up and shoot up the place. Quaid goes home and tells Lori what happened, that’s when she tries to kill him. He asks her why is she trying to kill him, she tells him that she’s not his wife, she’s UFB security.

Total Recall is beautiful but quite empty rerun about one of the greatest scifi movies of the 90’s. Mabye the makers has wanted to get as much audience as they can for this movie and decided to lower the violence and language to lower the age limit of audience. You can’t blame the movie a lack of action. It is turbo-loaded action from start to end. But is that enough…probably not. Almost whole movie is filmed in digitalised studio prop and Im sure that it could look great in 3D. Of course the movie has some good points with the great actors but it has almost nothing to do with Paul Verhoovens claustrophbical original movie. If you like to watch fine popcorm movie, then this movie works just fine. Myself I prefer the older version next time.
