Piiat, The Help (2011)

”Piiat” perustuu Kathryn Stockettin samannimiseen menestysromaaniin. Elokuvan pääosissa nähdään Emma Stone (Easy A) – Skeeter, Oscar® -ehdokas Viola Davis (Doubt) – Aibileen ja Octavia Spencer – Minny – kolme hyvin erilaista ja ainutlaatuista naista 60-luvun Missisipistä, joiden yllättävä ystävyys saa alkunsa salaisesta kirjaprojektista, joka rikkoo kaikkia yhteiskunnan normeja ja osoittautuu jopa vaaralliseksi.

Jos pitäisi alkaa arvuuttelemaan ensi kevään Oscar-ehdokkaita, voisin melkein väittää että Piiat on yksi niistä. Se että saako elokuva Oscareita on toinen asia, mutta ehdokkudesta olisin melko varma. Piiat olisi voinut olla vielä räväkämpi, mutta ihan hauska se on tällaisenaankin. Jotenkin elokuva toi mieleen Spielbergin Häivähdys Purppuraa. Se tosin oli paljon väkeväämmin kirjoitettu ja näytelty, kuin Piiat. On uskomatonta ajatella, millaista mustien elämä on ollut Jenkeissä vielä muutama vuosikymmen sitten. Mutta toisaalta kun ajattelee tämän päivän yhteiskuntaa ja sitä miten jotkut sen edustajat vähemmistöjä arvostavat ja kohtelevat niin ei taida meidänkään yhteiskunta Persujemme kanssa hirveän edistyksellinen olla. Piiat on ihan hauska ja ajatuksia herättävä ja sen tulisi olla pakollista katsottavaa kaikille kansanedustajillemme. Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter (Stone) is a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends’ lives — and a Mississippi town — upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen (Davis), Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, is the first to open up — to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter’s life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories — and as it turns out, they have a lot to say. Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before everyone in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly — and unwillingly — caught up in the changing times.

If you should start to keep you guessing by next spring, the Oscar nominations, I could almost argue that the Maids is one of them. It’s going to get the film Oscars is another matter , but I would be pretty sure ehdokkudesta . Maids could have been räväkämpi , but it’s pretty funny , it is as it is.
